Care homes open doors to combat loneliness and isolation

Older people are being welcomed into Sussex Housing & Care’s residential care homes in Battle and Bexhill for a free hot lunch, to enjoy some friendly company and to take part in a variety of activities.

Sussex Housing & Care, a not for profit provider of housing and care for older people in Sussex, is leading the initiative to help tackle the increasing local and national problem of loneliness and isolation amongst older people.

Ardath care home in Bexhill will open its doors on Wednesday 21 February, 11am to 4pm. Visitors can enjoy a hand massage, gentle chair exercises, live ukulele music, refreshments and a two course lunch.

Saxonwood care home in Battle is welcoming visitors over three days from Tuesday 27 February to Thursday 1 March from 12 noon for a two course lunch followed by a variety of activities.

Vafa Hurst, Regional Manager said: “We know that one million older people in the UK can go for a whole month without speaking to a friend, neighbour or family member. Social isolation is a problem local communities can help to tackle. We want to give older people the opportunity to spend time with our friendly residents and staff whilst enjoying some fresh, home cooked food and activities. We’d encourage people to book their place so please call us on 01424 210538 for Ardath or 01424 774336 for Saxonwood.”
