Celebrating International Women's Day

We’re celebrating International Women’s Day today by capturing some of the amazing life stories of our residents.

Margaret McNerney at Oakwood Court care home in Haywards Heath told us hers: “I was a social worker for about 20 years in Brighton and Hove and also Essex. It was very different then to how it is now. I had a long training for this job and particularly enjoyed working with people who fostered children and supporting them as some of the situations the children had been in were not easy.

I found my role quite challenging, I used to have to present to the courts and deal with some sensitive cases but I enjoyed being able to help people and make a difference to them.

When I was young most women stopped work when they had children to become a house wife. After having my son I continued working part time so my only child could mix with other children at nursery. Women have always been a valuable part of our society.”

The purpose of International Women’s Day is to celebrate the social, cultural, economic and political achievement of women.
