Social Housing Green Paper

The Government’s Social Housing Green Paper – A New Deal for Social Housing – was published on 14 August 2018.

The Green Paper draws extensively on a government listening exercise in which ministers heard the views of social housing tenants in different parts of the country. It touches on the issues exposed following the Grenfell Tower fire, but also brings in intelligence from other research.

Overall, it strikes a positive tone about social housing, repeatedly stressing its importance to the country as a whole, which is very welcome. However, in some places The National Housing Federation (NHF) think the Green Paper does not go far enough, for example on supply and stigma.

The NHF have published a discussion paper (see link below) which outlines the key issues, risks and areas of opportunity for housing associations in the Green Paper. Housing Associations have the opportunity to send their responses to the NHF by 6 November. Tracy Evans, Chief Executive of Sussex Housing & Care shared our response with the NHF.
