Ardath opens its doors to combat loneliness and isolation

Ardath care home in Bexhill opened their doors last week to members of the local community to help tackle loneliness and isolation amongst older people in the area.

Residents and guests enjoyed visits from the Mayor of Bexhill, Councillor Abul Azad, and MP Huw Merriman, as well as a free lunch and activities on the day.

MP Huw Merriman said, “It was lovely to go back to Ardath and chat with the residents about the national issues of the day and the projects I am working on locally. I really applaud the staff for throwing open their doors, not just to me but to those in our community who are isolated and in need of company. In an area like ours, where we have an older population, loneliness is a huge issue. I hope other organisations will follow the lead of Ardath and help local people to get out, interact and have more fulfilling days.”

Georgie, a resident at Ardath, said, “This was the second time that Huw has visited Ardath and it is nice that he spares the time to visit us elderly people. We really enjoy his visits.”

Mayor Azul Azad said, “Thank you to the staff and management of Ardath care home for inviting me to their loneliness and isolation day. It is so important that people understand the links to health and well-being and ensure that where possible people are given the opportunity to spend time with others.

“Meeting with the residents, management and staff made me realise how important such care homes are. Our town is known for providing lifestyle facilities to the vulnerable, especially the elderly. I wish Ardath care home good luck and great success for many years to come.“

Due to its popularity the loneliness and isolation days are now taking place at the home on a monthly basis, guests are welcome to drop in for an hour or stay for the whole day.
