Repair cafes are community-based initiatives that aim to reduce waste a by encouraging people to repair, rather than replace, broken household items. These cafes provide a space for people to bring their broken items and receive assistance from volunteer repair experts who are skilled in fixing a variety of items, such as electronics, furniture, and clothing. The goal of repair cafes is not only to reduce waste, but also to build community and share skills and knowledge.
The original Repair Cafe was founded in Amsterdam, Netherlands in 2009. The concept was created by Martine Postma as a response to the increasing amount of waste and overconsumption. The success of the first Repair Cafe led to the growth of the Repair Cafe Foundation, which now supports and coordinates repair cafes in numerous countries around the world.
