"Before I joined Sussex Housing & Care, I worked on repairing electrical motors, but wanted a change so decided to move into care and am really happy in this career.

I enjoy providing activities such as painting nails, reminiscence sessions and walks around the beautiful grounds here. A walk around the home is just the right distance for our residents - I feel lucky to work here.
I'm studying towards an NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care and I'm enjoying it. I've very nearly completed my care plan certificate which involves 16 different areas of caring for people and I've recently been awarded an end of life care certificate, which I've found very interesting. I'm also an infection control officer. I feel grateful to have been offered these opportunities to study from Sussex Housing & Care and to improve my theoretical knowledge of care.

I’ve worked at Oakwood Court for five years. The most important part of my role is caring for our residents, making sure they are dressed, have good personal care and all their needs are met. I also try hard to help them to maintain their independence.
I find putting on and arranging activities for residents very rewarding and I enjoy helping to stimulate them to be more active. I am currently studying a course about mental health with Central Sussex College and I’m learning a lot. I like training and studying and I feel you can never learn too much.

I’ve worked at Saxonwood for 14 years now. The most rewarding part of my job is looking after the residents, you are dealing with vulnerable people and it is great when you can help them. It’s being gentle and understanding and offering reassurance, making them feel safe.
We have a great team here, which makes all the difference. Training is provided and there are good opportunities for development and promotion.

“I’ve been here since May 2017 and have recently been promoted to a Senior Care Assistant. I’ve worked in care for four years and have experience in caring for people with brain injuries and dementia. I’m currently studying mental health problems.
Working at Woodlands makes me feel part of a great team, we have such a connection with residents and a good relationship with family and friends, and also other members of staff.”

Care Home Administrator
I have been in this role for seven and a half years, and I support Donna, our Manager, with all the administration at the home. This includes for example completing forms for new residents and staff, collating the residents’ activity calendar, paying invoices, helping to manage the budget, completing and submitting payroll and liaising with support services in Seaford.
I’m the first point of contact for everyone who walks through the door so I welcome friends and families of residents, doctors, nurses, tradesmen and I take care of all the telephone calls. Some of my colleagues say “I’m the glue that holds the home together!”
This is a very busy role and I have the freedom to complete my work, be with the residents and interact with staff. We’re a good team here.

I’ve worked at Oakwood Court care home for two years and in a nut shell I stop the home from burning down and falling down!
On a serious note, I take care of the day to day maintenance of the building making sure all the checks have been done such as unblocking the shower wells, checking light bulbs and the fire alarm is working, and cleaning the bins. There is generally a lot of cleaning involved and ensuring everything is in working order. I also decorate rooms when they become vacant and I’m a painter by trade.
My new task is looking after our six new resident goldfish!
I work with some absolutely brilliant people, staff and residents, it’s good fun and we all keep each other amused. I tackle everything with a smile and like to make people laugh.
I may have my week planned out but sometimes my work can be very reactive, you never really know what you’re going to walk into in the morning, this is why I love working here.

I've worked in a variety of care settings for many years. Care in the Community with profoundly physically disabled people and some with brain acquired injuries, before I started at Sussex Housing & Care 11 years ago in various job roles.
I started off at Saxonwood as the deputy and then the manager, In 2011 I became the scheme manager of Ashleigh Glegg House and Falfield in sheltered housing. When I first started at Ashleigh Glegg House we did not even have computers!
So our job role as scheme managers has greatly changed over the last five years but I have enjoyed the challenges of keeping up with those changes whilst keeping a high standard of continued service to the residents."
