Last week every day was very different at Saxonwood care home in Battle as the catering and care team arranged flavoursome and authentic themes from around the world!
According to scientists, the best strategies for staying happy during cold weather are; positive thinking, socialising, eating well and healthy, having fun, and exercising regularly. So, to overcome the winter blues, residents, families and staff came together and created a fun filled week.
Residents experienced the food and culture from a different country each day as the diverse staff team at Saxonwood created their favourite dishes, from a Caribbean curry to a Greek gyros.
Sigita, our Care Home Manager, said: “Residents loved the idea of enjoying culinary delights from around the world so our diverse team here each planned a themed day from their home country, or countries they have visited, so the food and activities were very authentic.
“We had Hungarian, Romanian, Italian, Greek, French, Caribbean and English cuisines and they looked and tasted great! Everyone enjoyed trying new food, tucking in, chatting amongst themselves, and making happy memories together. The chef received really positive feedback with requests to add some of the recipes to the next menu.”
The team decorated the home to suit the theme for each day and staff shared educational sessions about other cultures. Residents kept active by learning the dancing steps from traditional Romanian and Greek dances…it was a week full of fun. Everyone made great memories, enjoyed delicious food, togetherness, and new discoveries.
Meals are so important for wellbeing and companionship, and our care homes encourage residents to get together for a shared lunch. This gives the chance for a catchup and a social focus for the day, including welcoming family and friends.
Tracie, our Chef Manager, is passionate about cooking and baking. She said “I have a wonderful team who are not only hard working, but willing to go the extra mile to make sure our residents always have the best dining experience possible. I have been a chef and confectioner for many years, but you are never too old to learn new things. This week I learned how to cook some Eastern European dishes and cakes I had never seen before, they tasted and looked amazing.”
We received brilliant feedback from residents about the culinary week…
“Romanian food was fantastic, and the atmosphere was great. We'd all like to thank team for the wonderful food and effort they made for us to enjoy this unique dining experience.” (John)
“Hungarian beef stew was fantastic, we had amazing week despite the weather.” (Joan)
“Italian day with delicious food brought me back to great memories about traveling to Italy.” (Kathleen)
Harold shared lovely memories from his past holidays in Greece and particularly enjoyed the chicken gyros dish. While enjoying French cuisine, Georgie was exited to share her romantic memories about living in Paris.
This continental week is part of our Sunny Moments club, where we create a variety of daily activities to brighten residents lives.
