Craft club brightens residents’ day

A monthly craft club is bringing residents together at Oakwood Flats sheltered housing in Haywards Heath.

Arranged by Jackie, the Scheme Manager, the morning craft sessions are proving a brilliant way for residents to get together, enjoy learning new skills and share their craft ideas and hobbies.

Angela learnt how to crochet: “I’m 74 and I’ve been trying to learn to crochet all my life, and I’m now getting there and can do a few stitches thanks to the craft club! It’s a very enjoyable morning, we do something different each time. I’m looking forward to having this session throughout the winter months.”

Jenny moved to the sheltered housing scheme five months ago and has already attended four times. “I wanted to get to know people here and settle myself into my new home so I went along, it took some courage to get me there but I did it and I won’t look back. There have been so many crafts to choose from, I’ve painted tulips, which I’m really proud of! I’ve made pottery and cards, and enjoyed sending my card to a friend. We sit and chat and time flies! Jackie has done amazingly well setting it up and it’s lovely having her take part with us.”

Sussex Housing & Care helps many people to gain their independence through supported housing. We are celebrating the 'Starts at Home' campaign on 2 September 2022 alongside housing associations up and down the country, to ensure that people who need extra support will always have a home that meets their needs.
