Friday 30th August is Starts at Home Day - a day when housing associations across the country celebrate supported housing and the positive impact it makes on people's lives. We have spoken to a number of our residents to find out what difference it has made to them...
"I only moved to Oakwood Flats in August 2019 and am settling in well. I was previously in a high rise block of social housing flats in Brighton for 37 years and over the years the needs of people living there have changed, although I never had any problems with neighbours. I always felt safe there and enjoyed working as a nurse in Brighton hospital.
Unfortunately, my marriage failed in 1975 whilst living in Cornwall and I was left to look after my two children with very little to fall back on. Living in social housing has enabled me to bring up my children in a safe environment and to train and work in the local area, which was important to me as I don’t drive.
Once I retired I wanted to move out of Brighton and fulfil my love of the countryside and I was over the moon to have found my new home here in Haywards Heath. Now that I’m 74, I find myself living somewhere that suits my needs perfectly and it’s good to know there’s help on hand for me here with the scheme manager. It’s marvellous I can join in with coffee morning and outings if I want to and there’s a sense of community.
There is such a need for social housing, greater now than ever before. It’s so important people have a home, even a small one, and can access the right help if they need it."
