This week is Mental Health Awareness Week. Hosted by the Mental Health Foundation, the campaign aims to raise awareness of mental health problems affecting millions of people in the UK today.
Mental Health Awareness Week gives us an opportunity to talk about the problems and stigmas around talking about and diagnosing mental health issues.
As one in four people in the UK are said to be suffering with a mental health condition, many Britons are saddled with the looming issues of anxiety, depression, and other mental health problems, but struggle to find the help they need.
Here at Sussex Housing & Care we help to support both our staff and our residents to achieve good mental health.
Supporting our staff
- We are a real living wage employer - this means that every member of staff in our organisation is paid not only the minimum wage but the real living wage.
- We offer good terms and conditions of employment
- We have an employee assistance programme
- We ensure that the working time directive is monitored
- Staff have regular 121's
- We provide training and development opportunities to all of our staff
- Specific training on mental health is provided and we currently have two Mental Health First Aiders, and are training more staff to take on this role.

Supporting our residents
- Training our staff in mental health awareness means they are able to support our residents
- Regular isolation and loneliness risk assessments identify residents who may need some extra support
- Activities and events at our schemes and homes stimulate our residents wellbeing
- We are promoting volunteering roles within our homes and schemes to enable more opportunities for our residents to meet and assist each other, take more outings and meet people with similar interests
