We held a technology tutorial at Oakwood Flats sheltered housing in Haywards Heath on Monday 6 March and supported residents who had questions about their phones and tablets.
Jackie, Scheme Manager at Oakwood, set up the event after a number of residents said they could do with one-to-one support. Lizzie, Communications and Engagement Officer, supported residents and shared top tips throughout the morning.
Lizzie said: “Shirley wanted to be able to use Facebook messenger to chat with family, so we set up the app on her tablet and showed her how to send messages, she now has an accessible quick link on her tablet. Shirley also loves giraffes so we spent time on Google searching for photos and reading about them. Shirley now knows how to search for anything she can think of on Google!"
Shirley said: “I like to see photos and messages from my son and it’s brilliant to be able to do this now, thank you for showing me.”
Clare who is 91, came with her iPad to see how to access her Gmail account which was set up years ago. She said: “I’m thrilled to be able to get back into my email and look forward to sending messages to friends and family. I also learnt how to open google maps and we used a satellite view to see where I lived in South Africa. It’s very interesting!”
During the session we improved the security of two residents’ mobile phones by adding a pin number to access them. We also supported Jane with setting up an outlook email app on her new mobile phone.
This tutorial is part of Sussex Housing & Care’s Go Digital programme, to encourage and support residents to get online and enjoy the wealth of information and resources at their fingertips, as well as improve their mental health and wellbeing.
