Mary is 96 years old and moved to Saxonwood care home in Battle around four weeks ago. We spoke to Mary to find out how she is getting on at the home...
“I think it’s excellent, it is nice I’m not alone anymore. My husband died four years ago yesterday and I was on my own in a three-bedroom house with a garden, and all the responsibilities that go with it.
I decided to move into Saxonwood to relieve the pressure on my family who live in Derbyshire, I didn’t want them to worry about me.
It’s a very good home just on the outskirts of Battle, so better than being in a house in the middle of the country. Last week there was a chap singing songs of years gone by and I joined in, we play scrabble, I do the exercise class here on Thursday and the one in Battle on Wednesday. I still have my own car so am able to be mobile. The staff are so friendly and helpful.
Coming for a week’s respite care in the spring has really helped me to settle in. I know some familiar faces and sit for my meals with the same ladies I met on my last visit. That definitely helps having people to talk to straight away.
The best thing now is that I am never alone, I don’t like being on my own so it’s always good to know there are other people around.”
Thank you Mary for taking the time to speak to us.
If you or a loved one are looking for a short stay at Saxonwood, we are currently offering one week free of charge to those staying with us for two weeks or more between now and 28 February 2020.
