Katie is currently gaining valuable experience as a part time care assistant at Saxonwood care home in Battle, whilst she completes her A levels at East Sussex College in Hastings. With ambitions to become a Nurse, Katie is enjoying spending time with residents and growing her skills. We had a chat with Katie to find out what it’s like to work as a part time care assistant whilst studying.
“Working 18 hours per week at Saxonwood is giving me an excellent grounding and a kick start to my career. I’m currently studying Sociology, English Language and Psychology and I’m learning lots of theory and loving being able to put it into practice in my role here. I enjoy the relationship I have with residents to accommodate and understand their individual needs.
Everyone is so helpful, there’s a welcoming atmosphere. When I first started, I did a number of shifts where I shadowed colleagues, before picking up my own routine. I got to see and hear how they approach their work and have been inspired by them. I was nervous at first, being a care assistant is a responsibility, but I am really pleased with what I’ve achieved so far and with the support I’ve received.
I feel honoured to say I’m part of the residents’ later life, being someone they can trust and count on which makes my role very rewarding. Every time I finish a shift I feel a sense of achievement and can see how I’ve made an impact on their day. It’s the little things in life that matter.
If you have the ability to care for someone and have a natural desire to be there for people, I recommend you find out more about becoming a care assistant. Being part of someone’s life at home in their later years is a brilliant thing to do.”
